Belleza de barrio

Se habla mucho del canon de belleza, de los estándares, y cuando se habla de ella se está hablando en realidad de un estilo oficial, único, con referentes impuestos desde las revistas.

Pero finalmente la belleza es una virtud que viene impuesta de nacimiento. Se tiene o no se tiene y, hoy por hoy, cuando se intenta transformar con un bisturí, existe el riesgo de que el resultado convierta al aspirante a bello tardío en un adefesio de diseño.

Me decía una de las personas retratadas que “la belleza es la autoestima; es para verte bien tú misma, no para los demás”. Aceptando pues que no hay juicio estético más válido que otro, en “Belleza de barrio” prescindo de mis prejuicios y busco la belleza desde un criterio ajeno al mío. Me olvido de mis asunciones, determinadas por los filtros comerciales de la maquinaria publicitaria, e intento llegar al interior de la persona invitándola a ser hermosa, a mostrar su propia idea de belleza: la belleza que quiere proyectar en su entorno, en su barrio. La que quiere ver reflejada en los espejos de su casa.


Neighborhood Belle

We often talk about canons of beauty or standards of beauty and when we talk about them what we are really talking about is an official, unique style, with references imposed by glossy magazines.

But at the end of the day beauty is a virtue that is imposed at birth.  You’ve either got it or you don’t and today’s attempts to transform it under the surgeon’s knife run the risk of turning the aspirants to belated beauty into a designer eyesore.

One of the people portrayed here told me that “beauty is about self-esteem; it’s about feeling you look good for yourself not for anyone else”. If we depart from the premise that all aesthetic judgements are equal, in “Neighbourhood beauty” I put aside any personal prejudices and seek beauty by following a criteria that is not my own. I leave behind my assumptions, shaped by the commercial filters of advertising, and try to reach the inner being of each person, encouraging them to be beautiful, to reveal their idea of beauty: the beauty they wish to project in their surroundings, in their neighbourhood. The beauty they wish to see reflected in the mirror at home.
